BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

EXPECTATIONS & THOUGHTS

From hearing past students from Nuvia, I knew coming in that this year was going to be a year that I would struggle. I knew that she  was going to expect the most from us and that if we didn’t meet her expectations, it was going to be a tough year. I also expected to learn a lot in this class because it was a class focused on science and I had not had a science class since 7th grade.

PIVOTAL MOMENT

Post sophomore year, I knew I didn’t want Nuvia’s team because of the pig dissection lab. I didn’t like the idea of cutting up an animal, especially a baby. The first thought I had when I got my classes were: “I am opting out of the pig dissection” and with Nuvia being my advisor “I am going to get so sick of her by the end of the semester.” However, none of these two would come true. Since I forgot to tell Nuvia about me not wanting to do the pig dissection, I was stuck looking at a fetal pig for about a week and a half. I started by only doing the paperwork and letting either Nick or Dario doing all of the dissecting. Then, a day came when Nick was absent and I had to help hold the pig because I was the only one slightly willing to. Even though I really didn’t want to, I ended up enjoying the pig dissecting and was able to lead my group into taking out the thoracic cavity as well as the abdominal cavity. This made me realize that even though there are things that I am uncomfortable with, I need to try them because I never know if I may be good at it.

SCIENTIFIC EVOLUTION

In photography there are three main things that influence your camera: the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. They all work together to maintain the correct exposure for the shot you want to take. This picture is me focusing on shutter speed more than ISO and aperture which might make the picture slightly blurry, creates motion within the image and lets in a great deal of light. The setting on the camera describes how I began to become exposed to much more than I had been to in the past. With taking bio honors and being able to apply what I learn in my book to the classroom, I have been able to open my aperture to be able to take in as much “light” from biology class.
