CARLA ANDREA
INTERNSHIP PROJECT
My internship project helped my mentor look into something that has always been in the back burner for her. What I did was look at muscle tissue in the hind limb of the jerboa and searched for bright red aggregates, looking to see if the aggregates had a membrane. We were not entirely sure what these aggregates were, but if they had a membrane, this could have been a different type of cell death that would explain for the loss of muscle in the jerboa foot in mature development.
Through doing this, I was able to use my newfound patience and observant nature to search through multiple slides and sections of muscle. I utilized my previous Photoshop skills to create a figure that explained what we found along with my presentation experience to present to the entire lab on my last day of internship.

Below is a video of part of my presentation at the Cooper Lab.
This is the final draft of the figure paper that I created with Mai. It has all of the correct information!
Here are the antibodies and the microscope doing their magic. This is an image of the first time that I took a picture of muscle fibers in every channel.
Here I was creating the paper on Photoshop. This would have been the final paper, but it had incorrect data. When I was processing the images, I made the mistake of naming all of the files hind limb files, when there were clearly both fore and hind limb muscle. Luckily, Mai noticed and we were able to fix this together.
This is what I looked at when I was looking at the individual channel of myosin through the microscope.
