The CV Zine Fest was a student-produced festival created for the entire community of Southbay.  Our class collaborated with MCASD and The Gathering Grounds in order to create three exhibitions to showcase our work. In the beginning, we each chose social topics that we felt passionately about and then formed groups based on their similarity. From that point, we combined our ideas to find the best flow for our zine and created a cover that represented our topics collectively.

Along with this, we reached out to social advocates who helped us learn more about our topic. We highlighted them by creating stencils and collages that represented what they believe in.

We produced the Chula Vista Zine Fest where we sold our work and spoke to members of the community.

Teen Advocacy

As a group of teens we are not only making zines for our passions, but aside we have learned to advocate for the social change we want to see in the world. Personally, I have looked deeper than ever before into reasons as to why I feel better out in nature and how I can share that with people. I have started to think about what kind of careers I can look into that will help me preserve the world along with keeping up with the fast-paced lifestyle that humanity has created.
By speaking to many social advocates and my classmates, I have learned that advocacy can be for anyone as long as they have a passion in life. For many, this means dedicating your entire world to making change for one thing, which is extremely rewarding when you see progress being done. In order to be an advocate, you have to be consistent in your work and must be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.
Aside from the social topic essays we wrote in class, we got to participate in a national walkout day when I truly understood what it meant to be a teen advocate. We were told beforehand that if we left at 10 AM on April 20th, 2018, we would be marked truant. In the moment, we all realized that we had to make a choice about what we advocated for, in this case it was gun control. Being a part of that movement really showed me what students and teens were capable of. Iza, a good friend of mine, was a lead organizer and an inspiration to me now. We all believe that our actions are too minuscule for anyone to notice, but since this walkout was student-led, I was able to see how we could unite as young adults to pursue what we believe our country should stand for.
